Funky Cars > REPORT: Toyota reviving Celica name for joint Subaru RWD car
[Autoblog] Well, since the last Celica (and Supra and MR2), Toyota has had no presence in the sports/sporty car market. Aside from the new Lexus IS-F, the closest they have to a sporty car are the tC and a Camry with a v6...

[The Grayline] Rumor Motor: 2010 Celica RWD | The Grayline: For quite some time there have been rumors abound that Toyota is working closely with Subaru to create a rear wheel drive car, to be released in 2010. According to the blogosphere and forums where rumors get started, it will bear the badge name Celica. Can you imagine the ricer reception!
[Ride Lust - Motion + Mobility] Toyota Supra/Celica Revival Cancelled, Subieyota Sports FR Still On: According to reports, the Sports FR’s production delay is a direct result of complications that arose while attempting to mate Toyota’s D-4S direct-injection system with Subaru’s flat-4 boxer engine. Engineering complications aside, Akio Toyoda himself confirmed that the Sports FR will continue has planned, hitting dealer lots in 2012 with a price tag of around $21k.

[Car Throttle] Retrospective: When Toyota Made Interesting Cars, Part II: The new car switched over entirely to the new JZ block, with base models carrying the 220bhp 2JZ-GE 3.0L I6, almost as much as the old 7M turbo. Big news was the Turbo: the 2JZ-GTE under the hood was a 3.0L iron-block 24v six, fitted with twin-sequential turbocharging. Total power was 320bhp@5600rpm and 315lb-ft@4000 rpm. Oddly enough, US-market Supra Turbos were more powerful than Japanese Market cars. Thanks to smaller, quicker spooling impeller wheels on the turbos and larger injectors, the US-market Turbo handily beat the Japanese market car, 320 to 280. This is due to a “gentleman’s agreement” between the Japanese manufacturers to limit stated output to 276bhp - or 280ps. Of course, it’s unlikely the Japanese market Supras actually only made 280bhp, but it’s still interesting nonetheless.

[EverythingOutlet Blog] Toyobaru Coupe=8th Generation Celica? | EverythingOutlet Blog: Some of you know that the first Supra was a derivation of the Celica, before becoming Toyota’s flagship sports car before Japanese sport coupes got way too expensive. And because Toyota’s project of bringing super cars are likely canned with cost cutting measures today, this is probably the best we can get for the time beingn.

[The CarGurus Blog] The merger of Toyota and Subaru? | The CarGurus Blog: Usually there is some sensible driving force behind joint ventures, but here it only looks like an attempt by Toyota to release yet another Lexus look-alike and keep their designers fully employed. The price (if accurate) seems realistic, but there are many other cars in this class that I’d be more interested in driving than a 2WD Subaru that looks like a Lexus.

[drive blog] drive blog: Does the Toyota juggernaut have a wheel in the ditch?: most people just want a reliable vechile,I started life as a Ford man,302 cortina then ESP fairmont ghia then jumped ship to Holden,vs ss ute, but spent a lot of time in workshop for recals, oil leaks, elect gremlins,it became to much to handle.bought a Hilux,my brother now owns that, over 350000klms on it,never missed a beat.I now have current model Hilux, over 100000klms,no rattles no squeeks still as tight as the day I bought it.They just don't let you down and thats important when your in the middle of no where.one recall for bonnet catch, just a precautionary checkup at service,no action reqd..I do love a v8 growl though,Toyota have them,I wish they would offer them in Australian cars.
