[Whatever] Reader Request Week 2009 #1: SF YA These Days « Whatever: Sure, they’re getting _some_ stuff that is great and will be classics (Westerfeld/Doctorow, etc), but are they going to learn the same things as they would reading RAH’s Moon is a Harsh Mistress or Starship Troopers (I don’t know if these are considered juveniles or not - I suspect not - but that’s how old I was when I read them :). You can only have so many teen romance vampire stories before they tend to blur into an indistinct mass, and telling a romantic story aimed at teens, no matter how well done, is unlikely to teach some of the same things as reading a RAH book would.

[Bad Astronomy Blog] Chang’e-1 shoots the Moon | Bad Astronomy | Discover Magazine: Now, were I a fan of conspiracy theories (and if I thought our current government were sly and bright enough to be sufficiently Machiavellian to do it) I’d say that if the government actually was quietly helping Iran to become a regional atomic counterbalance to Israel they’d have all the more reason to rail against it publically until it becomes an ingrained meme that America Has Nothing To Do With Iranian Atomic Power. Basically make a matter of quiet policy a public antithesis, and when it does eventually become exposed, fallout (heh heh) is reduced due to incredulity.

Terra Australis and its L: So my friend Pete from Australia is no more weird than I am, contributing to some online discussions about this instead of preparing my exams or informing you about Australia. Can we just assume I've debunked the myth of antipodean .

[Damn Interesting Comments] Damn Interesting » The Personal Air and Land Vehicle: A Dutch entrepreneur named John Bakker is working closely with Spark design engineering to develop the Personal Air and Land Vehicle (PALV), a single-occupancy transportation unit which drives like an enclosed motorcycle on the ground, yet when necessary, it can unfurl its rotors and transform into an honest-to-goodness autogyro. This allows it to leap into the air on short notice, and cruise around at altitudes below the level of commercial air traffic.

[Charlie's Diary] Charlie's Diary: Let's put the future behind us: And yet, even reading each year's current crop of sci-fi award winners, I could still see the ghosts of that weird assumption that the future is going to be populated by detached people with European sounding names in jumpsuits and that all or most tech innovations will come from singular, maverick inventors. Yes, that is all cute, but it should be in the same category as Laser guns'n'boobs pulp sci-fi, an obsolete form.
