[Automobile Rumor Central] "Direct injection is a near-term solution - along with hybrid and biofuels like E85 - that fits well within GM's current portfolio, but our strategy envisions mid- and long-term powertrain solutions that will ultimately reduce vehicle emissions to zero, increase fuel efficiency dramatically, and displace petroleum as the primary energy source," Stephens said in the release.  "Vehicles like the 2011 Chevrolet Volt... are tangible examples of GM's vision."

[TheDetroitBureau.com] Is GM on Least-Cost Road to Fuel Efficiency? | TheDetroitBureau.com: The new 2.4L liter direct-injection engine to be featured in that vehicle is technology that does make clear sense for helping the near-term lineup. Both that engine and others (such as a new direct-injection V6 as well) coming out of GM Powertrain, as well as improved models in the middle reaches of both car and truck lineups, are crucial for regaining customers over the next few years.

[GmTruckHQ] GM adds more Direct Injection engines for 2010.: NEW YORK – The all-new, five-passenger 2010 GMC Terrain joins the rapidly growing list of vehicles with GM’s direct injected (DI) engines that use less fuel, make more power and produce fewer emissions. The Terrain brings to 18 the number of North American GM models that will feature DI in 2010 – more than any other manufacturer.

[Green Car Advisor] "GM's Do-Over Not Likely to Diminish Automaker's Efforts to Green ...: Joe Phillippi, a former Wall Street auto industry analyst who runs the automotive consultancy Auto Trends, says, however, that if GM were to drop any of its research into green technology, there still would be "plenty of other [auto]makers around the world that will have various types of hybrid technologies on the road" that could fill in the gaps.

[Green Car Congress] Green Car Congress: Presidential Auto Task Force Concluded Plug-In ...: Thanks to the work Ricardo done in the UK, we can now build turbodiesel engines that meet even the really strict CARB SULEV (EPA Tier 2 Bin 3) standard without needing urea gas injection into the exhaust stream, a huge breakthrough for such engines. Imagine GM putting the 1.9CTDi 16V engine with Ricardo emission control components rated at around 135 bhp (SAE 08/04 net) into the new Chevrolet Cruze--can you say fuel economy in the middle to high 40's for EPA highway rating based on the 2008 test?

[Blunt Object] Getting there from here « Blunt Object: Audi Sport’s head of engine development, Ulrich Baretzki, has a pretty good grasp of  how to get there from here.  (He has, after all, been designing high-performance endurance-racing engines for an ever more fuel efficiency-conscious racing series for a decade or more.  Oh, and they’ve been winning the 24 Hours of le Mans every year.)

I can’t believe they can use such a small fuel-efficient engine and provide sufficient power. That said, obviously, the ICE car is reaching its limits of efficiency. [Mani'z Robotics Blog] The Green Horizon: After years of powering giant trucks with names like Kenworth and Peterbilt, diesel engines will soon be much more common in US passenger cars and light trucks. (Diesels currently power about 60 percent of passenger cars in Western Europe.) Long shunned in the US because of their clattering noise and smelly exhaust, today’s diesels equal the refinement of gasoline engines but provide superior fuel economy.

[GM-VOLT : Chevy Volt Electric Car Site] Tesla CEO Critical of the Chevy Volt | GM-VOLT : Chevy Volt ...: This is the one trump card that the ICE still holds over the battery EV, and GM realizes this, because they understand MASS market in a way that Tesla can only dream of. Anything designed for the mass market has to be a compromise, and the Volt is the best available compromise that is capable of providing ICE free driving for four people and cargo, as far a distance as reasonably possible, on a daily basis as a sole vehicle, reliably, with no major failures for at least a decade, under all foreseeable climatic conditions, and also offer a refuelable extended range capability when needed, at a price that many people will be willing and able to afford.

[GM FastLane] The Case for GM: Fritz Henderson on Restoring Confidence | GM FastLane: I guess the people who continue to write the GM love notes did not take the time to prepare the factually based post I had posted on here detailing serious major missteps by the former CEO of general motors who had ample time in his 8 years as an executive to drastically change the GM business model. he was resistant to cut any unprofitable brands except Oldsmobile, sold profitable businesses at market low points, netting GM a loss on those asset sales.

[BMW of South Atlanta Weblog...] BMW Group has been named “the world’s most sustainable automotive ...: Our MINI E BEVs were changed from 4-seaters to 2-seaters because of the battery size and weight, and the effective range of the vehicles is relatively good, but only equivalent to approximately two gallons of diesel fuel. There can be no debate on the merits of battery research and we fully support efforts by the DOE to fund battery research, but doing this with the complete elimination of hydrogen storage funding would be very unfortunate.

[GM FastLane] Results Change Perceptions | GM FastLane: GM chose to focus on brands like GEO which was always cheesy and unsuccessful and Saturn which has a small following and small market share and never really gave either an important purpose. those funds could have been used to reinvent the company and streamline it, so now here we are 20 years later without Oldsmobile that recently was rated as the 5th most recognized brand in America even though its been completely phased out for over 5 years, and we have an extremely weak company that has poured billions upon billions into unsuccessful brands and strategies.

[GM-VOLT : Chevy Volt Electric Car Site] Will the Chevy Volt Jump-Start GM? | GM-VOLT : Chevy Volt Electric ...: If GM was creating this car in a vacuum, and they were the only guys producing it, like 3M does for post-it notes, then sure as costs came down they could translate that to profitability….however GM’s one and only advantage here is coming to NA market first/early (and they seem to be trying their best to mess that up as well). In 2015 (or whenever), when costs are coming down there are going to be lots of competitors getting those same benefits, and the price the market will bare will come down…then you get back into the ‘who can build the cheapest car’
