Chrysler notes that this lets them maximize the amount of available regenerative braking, but the other reason for going all-wheel-drive had more to do with the balance sheets: customers opt for AWD on 60 percent of conventionally-powered Durangos and Aspens sold.

[Autoblog] AutoblogGreen tries out Chrysler's new Aspen Hybrid: Switching from a regular to hybrid SUV will save more gas than going from a Matrix to a Prius. [Arxman - Cars Blog] First drive reviews on Dodge Durango/ Chrysler Aspen Hybrid 2009: As with other so-called full hybrids, the Chryslers shut down the gas engine at low speeds and can drive on electric power only, in this case at speeds up to 25 mph, and use their electric motors to recapture energy under braking. A further efficiency boost is that the additional power provided by the battery allows the Hemi to stay in four-cylinder mode more often, even at highway speeds.

[Comments for chrysler weblog] Comment on WSJ covers Chrysler-Nissan partnership by DaveS: Tell me it isn’t relevant to the subject of this Nissan-Chrysler posting, and the response is that if Chrysler had hybrids in its small vehicles with 4 cylinders on the road now it wouldn’t have its back to the wall and wouldn’t be cutting deals with Asians to get their small cars.
[Drive® Blog] The 2009 Chrysler Aspen Hybrid: Has Americas Back In The Hybrid ...: Borrowing heavily from the Dodge Durango HEMI Hybrid, the Aspen Hybrid features Chrysler’s innovative Electronically Continuously Variable Transmission, powered by two electric motors and four fixed gears. Perfectly combining power and fuel efficiency, the Aspen Hybrid manages to maintain the full, famed power of its 5.7-L HEMI V8 engine while simultaneously boasting a 40% jump in fuel efficiency. Even with a total output of 385-hp and 380lb-ft of torque, the Aspen Hybrid still earns an EPA fuel rating of 18mpg city/19 hwy [a significant improvement over previous model years' 13 city/18 hwy]. The noticeable boost in the Aspen Hybrid’s city rating can be directly attributed to Mode 1 of the Aspen Hybrid’s Two-Mode system and the 300V battery packs [automatically recharged by the vehicle's regenerative braking system] stored beneath the second row seats.
