[Jiblog] Toyota General Motors?: They've opened plants in the U.S., and they've been very sensitive to the loyalty Americans have towards Detroit. A few weeks ago, around the time of GM's announcement of their huge quarterly loss, the CEO of Toyota mused that perhaps it was time that they help GM and Ford by raising their own prices and by working more cooperatively with them. He wouldn't do this out of the goodness of his heart, but because helping GM and Ford would alleviate any future American backlash towards Toyota. Then, a little while after that, it was announced that GM and Toyota are going to be working together on fuel cell technology.
[dustbury.com] Back to the Forward Look: The closest thing we have to an iconic American automobile these days is the Chrysler 300, a massive, roaring rear-wheel-drive sled that, in its 300C guise, carries a big honking Hemi V8. It's perfect for 1957: why, they actually had a 300C then, a massive, roaring rear-wheel-drive sled that carried a big honking Hemi V8. The 21st-century C, alas, has been shorn of its fins, but it's selling kajillions of units: it's one of the few Detroit nontrucks moving without rebates.
[Sensibly Eclectic] American Made?: And it wears the Chrysler badge on its hood, a company founded in 1926 by American industrialist Walter P. Chrysler. Trouble is, the PT Cruiser is not built in the U.S. by wellpaid workers, but in Mexico by relatively low-wage local labor, and then imported into this country. And Chrysler, one of Detroit's so-called Big Three automakers, was bought out in 1998 by Stuttgart, Germany-based Daimler-Benz-makers of Mercedes-Benz.
[Stuff I Think You Should Know] Today's Moment of Asininity¢ brought to you by:: Workers at DaimlerChrysler's Indiana Transmission Plant I and Plant II better allow more time to walk in from the parking lot if they drive Fords or General Motors vehicles.Um, screw you, no. If it takes me an extra five minutes to cross the parking lot because of this crap, then I'll be five minutes late. If it's raining, my first stop after punching my time card will be the bathroom to dry off.
