Funky Cars > Chevy Volt Will Have "Mountain Mode" | Hybrid Cars

[HybridCars.com] Larry Nitz, GM’s director of hybrid electric power engineering, today said that the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid will have a “mountain mode,” as a standard feature, in addition to the normal and sport mode. In a conference call with journalists, Nitz said the new mode will allow Volt drivers to set a larger reserve capacity in the battery in terrain that would require extra power.

[Green Car Reports] 2011 Chevy Volt Marketing Theme Emerges: An EV for Road Trips ...: The 2011 Nissan Leaf and 2011 Coda Sedan, for instance, will both offer an electric range of up to 100 miles--after which they must be recharged.Even under the best of circumstances, using high-voltage private or public charge points that largely don't exist yet, recharging those cars will take 30 minutes to several hours. And so-called range anxiety is likely to be a major impediment to mass adoption of EVs.On yesterday's call, GM's executive director of powertrain engineering, Larry Nitz, returned over and over to the theme that a Volt is an electric car you can use as a primary vehicle and take anywhere.

[Hybrid Cars] Hybrid Cars: The Chevy Volt and the end of Government Motors: anyhow, based on that interview - more precisely based on my intuition brought forth by the interview - i'd bet that if the HP CEO became the CEO of GM, the first goal he would set is to make GM the most fleet fuel efficient automaker in the US, then the World, without question.

[GM-VOLT : Chevy Volt Electric Car Site] Chevy Volt Will Have Driver Selectable Mountain Mode: I wonder if the first-year Volts will only be offered as a lease.I just received my GM Card bill, and it included a notice that we WILL NOT BE ABLE TO APPLY GM CARD EARNINGS TO LEASE A VOLT for the first year, i.e., until November 2011.Then they go on to say that “as of November 2011, you will be able to apply your GM Card earnings to the Chevy Volt.”What caught my attention was the use of the word LEASE in the first year (no mention of BUY), then ambiguous reference to the second year and beyond (no distinction whether LEASE or BUY).Maybe GM views the first year as something like a “beta test,” offering leasing as the only option, as they did with the EV1.This would also explain why they are keeping the numbers down in the first year.I can’t fault them for this ”” they have been through rough times and probably feel the need to be very prudent to avoid major slip-ups with a large multiplier effect due to having a large fleet out in the first year.Any thoughts?

[Celebs And Cars] 2011 Chevy Volt Marketing Theme Emerges: An EV for Road Trips ...: @Mot G: There's roughly a 1000-fold difference in the power provided by the photovoltaics you could fit on a car's surface and what it takes to recharge a high-voltage battery. Note that the 2010 Toyota Prius with the "solar moonroof" generates enough power to run 2 small ventilation fans.

[Hybrid Cars] Hybrid Cars: Does China own the keys to the Chevy Volt?: China is quickly becoming a very important lithium ion manufacturer and the country is developing fairly aggressive plans to increase electric vehicle adoption. If GM can work this relationship successfully, they might be able to own a piece of lithium-cell manufacturing and increase the profitability of all their battery-powered vehicles.
