[Streetsblog New York City] Streetsblog New York City » Today's Headlines: The comparison with seat belts and bike helmets is like comparing apples and oranges.  You’re comparing something which is statistically proven to save lives, allows the driver to control the car better by holding them in place, keeps occupants from being thrown out of the vehicle, and which has little or no downside when used properly (unless you’re morbidly obese), to something which has marginal effectiveness in a limited number of circumstances, but which also has serious downsides, including increased risk of rotational injury.  I wouldn’t ride in a car without wearing a seat belt, but at the same time I feel perfectly safe cycling without a helmet, or rather I feel wearing a helmet while cycling won’t measureably enhance my safety.  The primary way cyclists die is via car-bike collisions.  Most other crashes only result in non-fatal road rash, including a fall I once had after hitting a pothole at 37 mph.  I was back on the bike next day.  Had I hit my head on a curb or some other obstacle at that speed, a bike helmet would have offered about as much protection as tissue paper.  As a good example, professional cyclist Wouter Weylandt, who was wearing a helmet, died instantly after crashing during a 50 mph descent in the Giro d’Italia on May 9.  Helmets start to lose their effectiveness above 10 mph.  Generally they’re pretty much useless at the 20-25 mph speeds on level roads which strong cyclists like myself achieve.
