Funky Cars > Anti-American car billboard?

[AdJab] That's actually pretty funny, but of course, a lot of people are pointing out that the car is made by DaimlerChrysler, and that "Chrysler" is very much American. Also, there's the fact that it's on a Clear Channel billboard, though that has more to do with the actual physical billboard itself than the ad that's on it, so whatever.

Several other bloggers picked it up, and most commenters have engaged - not always subtly - in a discussion of whether DaimlerChrysler was tapping the diffuse anti-Americanism, or rather trying to signal that the car was a product of the European design approach.

[Autoblog] SMART ass advert rips on American autos -... : Apparently the American auto industry's reputation is particularly worthless in South Africa as this billboard ad for the SMART forfour shot on the side of the road near Johannesburg portends. It glibly reads, "German engineering, Swiss innovation, American nothing." The parent company of SMART, DaimlerChrysler, happens to be a "German-American" multinational corporation, so the fortwo has deeper ties to these United States than this billboard and SMART's ad agency suggest.

[NeanderNews] ”˜Smart Car’ ~ American Nothing: I could somewhat understand this if it was based on the unfortunate fact that the American auto industry has built some shallwe say less than satisfactory autos over the years, but my gut feeling is that DaimlerChrylser is more likely trying to capitalize on the anti-American sentiment that is so trendy in some parts of the world.

I for one think America is the greatest, most successful, freest, and most generous society in the history of civilisation.
