Coming Soon: THE FUTURE! or Where The Heck Is My Flying Car?

[About Autos] I remember it like it was yesterday, it is a beautiful spring day in 1993 and I was sitting in my third grade study room. We got children’s science magazines and discussing all the superb gizmos within that were due in, THE FUTURE! Bigger PCs, smaller computers ( and even less expensive ones ), cameras with tiny screens that showed the photograph you simply snapped, dynamic games systems with-wait for it….16 BITS! Whatever those are! The one thing that really stuck with me though, was the automated car. It had something similar to a GPS built in, where you would program in coordinates and the car would follow those directions. How it might sense other automobiles, traffic lights, and stop signs, I have no idea and it definitely failed to cross my mind at the time. The vehicle was supposed to start on it’s own and drive to your destination, basically chaffering you. And for whatever reason there would be a microwave in the dashboard. At the end of the outline was the sentence, Even a seven year old would be ready to drive! Why, I was seven! That meant when this vehicle came out in the near future, I would be ready to get one! Elated, I awaited the day my lovely automatic auto would roll off the line. And waited, and waited and here I am 17 years after and the nearest thing to an automated car is a strip of road in japan that utilises magnets to drag your car.
