Where I Stand On Dealer Holdback

[Strategies for Smart Car Buyers] In order to reduce the costs that the holdback may have to cover, why don't dealers simply advise most customers to order their cars? The dealer would then keep very few cars on the lot for customers who can't afford to wait, reducing costs and the risk of having to reduce price on cars that stay on the lot for too long.

What the Hell is the Smart?

[The Tarmac Philosopher] The Smarts are built for the streets of Rome, Paris, and other EU metropolises where parking spaces are as common as Nascar fans and where the cops could care less if you parked on your own grandmother. Thus, the practical purpose of the Smart’s size falls flat on its face here in the US.

Porsche calls on Ken to show C-charge opinion

[Greenbang] In his letter, Andy Goss, Managing Director of Porsche Cars GB, said, “I am requesting that you finally release the full tables of the Ipsos-Mori poll you announced in a news release on 18 December 2007. According to your release, the poll showed that the public supported your proposed plans. However, I understand that despite repeated requests to your pollsters over the last two months, the full tables have yet to be made public. I have enclosed a copy of the British Polling Council’s rules, which are also available on their website (www.britishpollingcouncil.org).”

Explosion at Porsche factory halts 911 production

[Autoblog] Apparently a furnace used for drying coating sheaths was the source of the boom, which set off the sprinkler systems and ground 911 production to a halt. Reports say production will be down at least 2 - 3 days, which means Porsche could lose about 320 to 480 units of production, not to mention the cost of damage to property.

[Windypundit] Car-like SUV's are basically cars with beefed-up suspensions and drivetrains. This will be our first SUV, so we don't want anything too radical, and since we're not planning on any serious off-roading, and we'd appreciate a smooth ride, we decided on a car-like SUV.

[Wheels] I received the e-mail asking me to configure the car and also received a call in late decemeber saying i would be getting my car before the end of January. I was #13 to be delivered here in san diego and love the car, (except for the transmission,which should only be used with the paddle shifters) talk about making me and everyone else smile around here.

(And for which I would think good mileage would be the main reason to buy it, given that it looks absurd, and if you’re ever in an accident, I have to think you’d be toast.)

Driving

[Through Myself and Back Again] I can drive a long way in Ireland (where 'driving' tends to translate 'sitting behind a tractor for five hours on the one-lane road between two major cities'), and to lesser extent in the New Forest, where I've done most of my driving. London driving scares me a lot.

Rockstar "Never" Planned Grand Theft Auto Movie [Hollywood]

[Kotaku] Actually, given the writing of the Rockstar team and the...hmmm...fascination of movies that they have, if it was a Rockstar Production, meaning R* does the script, hires a director that they know could pull it off, then I could see it being a good movie. What, each game already has enough cutscenes to make up a good half hour (if not longer), and while the fun of the games is in the playing of the games, I don't see it too difficult for the R* writers to put together a movie script, if they wanted to.

At the moment there are few, if any, ways for people to find partners for informal car clubs in towns and villages where commercially operated car clubs would be uneconomic.
