Mitsubishi to supply new engines to Smart

According to spec sheets of the concept, it’s powered by a 3-cylinder turbocharged MIVEC engine, so likely that and a normally aspirated version would be supplied to smart.

Nurburgring record shattered

[My Quiet Life] Vergers lapped one of the world’s most difficult circuits, the Nurburgring Nordschleife, in 6 minutes 55 seconds, 20 seconds faster than the previous production car record set by a Porsche 996 GT2.The 13 mile-long Nordschleife has 73 corners (many of them blind) and numerous abrupt elevation changes. Sorry for the lack of updates

[paultan.org - Paul Tan's Raves and Rants on the Automotive Industry] The 4G93 SOHC makes much less horsepower than the 4G93 DOHC found in the Putra and Satria GTi but it’s torque was nearly the same, and comes in at a much lower RPM, common trait for a single cam engine. I figured that would be better for the traffic jam and city driving that I always go through, plus it was much cheaper as the engine was not really in demand.

[Mover Mike -] by movermike From the London Irvine Report, it's going to be tough to be an American worker as this is a sign of things to come: The world's largest automaker (GM) disclosed in an SEC filing that it had received subpoenas from the agency related to a variety of topics, including concerns over pension and retiree health care costs, transactions between GM and its former parts unit, Delphi, which filed for bankruptcy court protections earlier this month, the automaker's recovery of recall costs from suppliers and supplier price reductions or credits. Delphi Corp., the largest U.S. auto parts supplier, wants to cut workers' wages by as much two-thirds and eliminate health care for retirees as part of a plan to exit bankruptcy.

[just another morning here] I went back to work afterwards, while Steve and the children drove up to Dartmoor, went for a walk and to skim stones in a stream somewhere, *and* they made lunch in the van (ooh, the novelty ). European manufacturers to go the turbocharged way

[paultan.org - Paul Tan's Raves and Rants on the Automotive Industry] European carmakers feel that turbocharged small engines are the way of the future, to increase fuel economy and reduce emmissions. Instead of using a big normally aspirated engine, a small capacity engine with a turbocharger is used so that fuel economy and emmissions is lower, but the turbo can give that required surge of power whenever maneuveres such as overtaking are required.
