Why wont a cars starter work?
[Conscious Junkyard] During a start, once the starter’s rotating pinion gear reaches the missing teeth of the ring gear, it would no longer mesh and would stop turning the flywheel, and the starter would simply spin. Another type of starting problem occurs when you try to start the car and it’s followed by a loud high-pitched noise, which is the sound of the starter spinning without having engaged the ring gear. Repeating the effort a time or two might result in a successful engagement and engine start.

The Carrera 911, sporty anyway, sticks to the tarmac and thus guarantees pure motorsports feeling. The suspension cross-brace, developed by Hamann, improves torsional rigidity and makes the Carrera sprint considerably more agile on the tarmac.

The great Ford hope?
[thoughts of the driver] Yesterday, I decided to give Anton a poster of the Bailey MK2 RS2000 rally prepped escort, which came with Fast Ford last month, naturally he’s ecstatic, since he’s currently building a V8 MK2 escort, which I really look forward to seeing in action. When I swung by the garage the guys were having some fun with a black Caprice, which had a 9.3L engine IIRC, which only had one side of the exhaust on, so it was really really loud, the last I saw of the Caprice was in my rearview mirror, it heading the other way, and tyresmoke all around it.

GM Recalls Over 2 Million Vehicles
[Drivers Drive: An Automotive Blog With Car News and Resources] Not good for the company that just reported a bad first quarter. The Associated Press says the brunt of the recall is "1.48 million SUVs and pickups from the 2003-2005 model years, including the Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab, Suburban, Tahoe, Avalanche; Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT, GMC Sierra Crew Cab, Yukon XL, Yukon, and the Hummer H2s." These vehicles were recalled because of a problem with the center safety belt in the second row that causes the belts to ride too high -- possibly reducing protection. No injuries have occured because of the faulty seat belt.

My car is back on the road..
[thoughts of the driver] I’m starting to sound like a broken record, “Back on the road….Back on the road….Back on the road”. But today I went to the Ford Dealership in iceland, lovingly referred to as Brimbürgh, and brought the little plastic son of a bitch with me. They guy at the parts department asked if my focus was from the US, because it was a 2.0 liter. My face almost dropped off, I said “no, it’s a european car, although you lot didn’t bother to import a lot of the 2.0l foci, they were quite popular in the UK for example” — This is further proof that 2.0l foci like mine are rare in iceland.

Final goodbye to WRC inspiration, hello I6 turbo power?
[thoughts of the driver] They’ve still got to sort out the transmission though, I don’t think getrag makes a transmission at the moment capable of coping with more than 400Nm, so if they don’t make a stronger version of either the M66 or MMT6, we might see something similar to the 6 speed used in the S60R (if it can handle 300bhp in the S60R, and 340bhp in the V50 SC concept, it may suffice, but I don’t know that transmission at all, it may even *be* a getrag unit?). I may be way off, and they wouldn’t even go for a traditional FWD transmission because it’s a 4WD car, I’m clueless technically this time! This will be interesting

Fix or repair daily?
[thoughts of the driver] Today I left work at 15:20 or so, because I wanted to get my car fixed, its been out of commission since last thursday, when that little plastic cube thingy went loose again. The purpose of that plastic cube is to keep firmly in place the lever which turns a shaft to engage and disengage the gears (the up/down motion with the gearstick). Shifting is entirely possible without this little plastic cube, however it feels more loose and will probably cause wear in bad places...

[thoughts of the driver] The Range Rover is a better looking machine in my opinion, and it has an air of sportish meanness about it, like the Range Rover’s younger hooligan brother. When I imagine myself rolling down main street, I think people will look twice at the Range Rover, but only once at the X5 — and sometimes that matters. Balls Out
[The Moronosphere] A one minute google exercise didn't turn up a definitive origin of the phrase 'balls out'. But we all know what it means; full bore, full throttle, maximum speed, turned to 11. So the origin isn't particularly important. What is important is that it's how I generally do things. The usual quote goes “I have two speeds, all the way on, and all the way off.” I see speed limits as optional, and fundamentally think they're a bad idea. I don't like limits. I don't like rules. I don't do things a little bit. I dive deep. I drink hard. I like to push it 'til it breaks, I like to go 'til it hurts. Again though, that's not the point. That's background data. I don't drive slow. Ever. Today though, I did something I've never done before. I was late for work. We had the big WWDC announcement, and my project was on deck. I wanted to be in the room at work when the announcement played, wanted to hear the reaction of people around me. So even more than usual, I was in a rush to get out. I took the...

Take the wheel and steer
[thoughts of the driver] Yesterday I got my car back from the body shop, getting a new right-front fender, the door fixed, and both items sprayed cost me 82.141 ISK, or well, cost my friend sulkd that amount. It’s a rather good deal, given that they even used leftover paint to fill in holes in the hood where paint had chipped, and cleaned the whole car inside and out. The Horror of the Porsche SUV
[Shopping Blog at ShoppingBlog.com * Shopping Trends and Hot Products *] When someone says to you, "Hey, I got a new Porsche. Want to go for a ride?" you gleefully reply, "love to!", expecting to see a 2006 Porsche 911 GT3 2 door coupe perhaps. Instead you are led to a horrifying lump of a car, which looks like a Saab after a bad case of indigestion. Out tumble soccer balls, a dog in need of a trip to the groomers and some old lunches.

Cherokee Problems Still
[Mikes Blog] About a year ago, while wheeling at Paragon Adventure Park, I bent up my exhaust pretty good, had my check engine light come on and stay on, and randomly have an extremely rough idle complete with a surging after almost stalling. Now since I got back I checked the engine codes to see what was causing the check engine light. It claimed that my O2 sensors were bad.

Jeep Update
[Rambling Thoughts] It is a hard thing to describe, but it really is a Jeep thing and I am not looking forward to getting rid of it. I will admit though, I would love to have a ‘90-94 Wrangler like my first Jeep and they are easy to find and usually in much better shape that my’83 Cj7. So that is where things stand right now. I will enjoy the driving to and from for a few weeks until it sells and then look forward to a time when I can put the time and money into a keeper!

Quick update
[mainerides.com] Between Floyd getting sick and Eric being a giant wuss, we managed to skip the Autocross last weekend. Basically the 45-degree, rainy weather didn’t seem like it would be the most fun place to be. So we bailed. The “good” tires are on the car now, though the O2 sensor is still sitting in the ashtray.

Holy Crap, A Saturn I Dont Hate
[autoblog.robotshuffle] Slated to come out late next year, the 2007 Saturn Sky is based off of the new hottness that’s taking forever to come out, the Pontiac Solstice. Motor Trend thinks that it’ll give the Miata and a Z4 a run for their money, but we’ll see about that. It shares the 2.4 liter ECOTEC engine with the Cavalier and the Solstice, producing 170hp.

The AP says GM will fix the problem for no charge.

Can a GPS Network Help Drivers Avoid Traffic Jams?
[Drivers Drive: An Automotive Blog With Car News and Resources] A $1.3 million study by New Yorks Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (funded by federal and state highway officials) links GPS data from participating vehicles into a central database and spits back data on traffic patterns. A driver with the right equipment gets realtime warnings if he's about to enter a congested zone, and can then route around it. Sounds great, but we cant help but wonder: if everyone's connected, and they all follow the same prompts to avoid congestion, won't the traffic just hit them all when they adjust their route -- and again, when they swerve to avoid the jam they've just created?
