HOWTO: Learn to brake properly using ABS Brakes

[Paul Tan - paultan.org - Cars, technology, gadgets, and alot of other random stuff.] Most of us have been taught that during heavy braking such as emergency braking to avoid an accident, you have to pump the brakes on and off to prevent skidding due to loss of grip when you brake too fast. When you slam on the brakes hard on a car without ABS, the wheels will jam, especially if you have crappy tyres. Once the wheels are skidding you have loss of car steering control because the wheels do not grip the road, and no matter what amount of steering you do, the car will continue moving in the direction it’s inertia is bringing it. Thus, the pumping action we have been taught to do during heavy braking.

Porsche Provides Details on New Cayman S

The Cayman S will go on sale in the United States and Canada in mid January of 2006 at a price of $58,900 US and $83,900 CDN. Porsche offers the following description of the Cayman: The Cayman S's muscular 3.4-liter, flat-six cylinder engine propels the car from 0 to 60 mph in a quick 5.1 seconds and to a top track speed of an impressive 171 mph. The engine is equipped with the same VarioCam Plus variable valve timing system as found on the 2005 911 Carrera. Changing oil using household items, yeeeha!

[thoughts of the driver] I just changed the oil on the focus, and I found I didn’t have a funnel, nor a good container to take the oil flowing from the oil pan. Enter my kitchenware! I used some bowl from ikea to collect the oil, except it only takes about 3 liters, and the engine uses 4.25L.

Maybe they’re right about the market

[BooIzzy.com] Driving Choices Like most Americans my main mode of transportation is my car. After spending two years getting around on my feet and by public transportation in Boston and New York, I had to give in and buy a car when I moved to Salt Lake so that I could get myself to work. It's not the worst car in terms of gas mileage, but it's not the best. In most other areas of my life, there's a lot that I can do make more environmentally--friendly choices. I carry a cloth bag. I buy mainly organic foods. I shop at local businesses. I purchase wind energy. But I feel pretty stuck with my car. If you don't live in an area with good public transportation or within walking distance of work and shopping, you're pretty much stuck needing a car. And you don't have a ton of options when it comes to making green choices with that car. You could either get on the waiting list for a hybrid or buy a alternative fuel vehicle and hope you can find a reliable fuel source. My problem with both of...

Back on the road!?

[thoughts of the driver] Yesterday I get a call from the Ford dealership in iceland, saying they’ve got the hose I needed for my car. I gleefully drive my girlfriends “sans rear suspension subaru” up there to pick it up, it costs me a whopping 8700 ISK ($133 USD, or 72 GBP) — I wish I had a picture of the hose, but I think that’s a lot.

Jeep Update

[Rambling Thoughts] It is a hard thing to describe, but it really is a Jeep thing and I am not looking forward to getting rid of it. I will admit though, I would love to have a ‘90-94 Wrangler like my first Jeep and they are easy to find and usually in much better shape that my’83 Cj7. So that is where things stand right now. I will enjoy the driving to and from for a few weeks until it sells and then look forward to a time when I can put the time and money into a keeper!

Cherokee Problems Still

[Mike’s Blog] About a year ago, while wheeling at Paragon Adventure Park, I bent up my exhaust pretty good, had my check engine light come on and stay on, and randomly have an extremely rough idle complete with a surging after almost stalling. Now since I got back I checked the engine codes to see what was causing the check engine light. It claimed that my O2 sensors were bad.

I'm running the Stage I map because I haven't done the downpipe yet. Now, I assume I'm running about 275hp, but once I have that DP I should be hitting at about 300hp.

Local Meet

[Man, you've got some f'ed up friends. Limber, tho.] Yesterday afternoon, I met up with about 40 or 50 fellow Subaru enthusiasts in my area and caravanned up to Park City for a drive. Despite 95% of us driving quite conservatively, we still ran into some severe problems with the law. About half of our group got separated because the police set up a road block to better control us.

Fossil Fools Day in Calgary: Jumpstart Ford Protest

Since there was only a core group of about 6 people who worked on putting the event together here, we were quite pleased with the turnout. Chrysler recalls 70,000 minivans

[New Car Quotes & Local Dealer Auto Quotes] 70,384 model year 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans have been recalled to replace a faulty control on the rear liftgate. The liftgate latch could become stuck, not close properly and cause the liftgate to open when the vehicle is moving. There has been no reports of injuries or crashes, just rear hatches opening up at low speed.
